Hollywood has led us to believe that the Colt pistol and Winchester rifle tamed the West, but two other little-sung heroes were actually responsible---windmills and barbed wire.  Windmills came in the 1850s and allowed pioneers to settle down. Barbed wire came in the 1870's and spelled the end of the open range.
